In the spotlight

In memory of Jørgen Ingerslev (1942 – 2019)

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Jørgen Ingerslev earlier this month.

Prof. Ingerslev was a world leading specialist in the haemophilia and bleeding disorders field. Recognised for his knowledge and dedication to his profession, he had an extensive output of research publications and was a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia around the world.

Prof. Ingerslev’s career started in 1968, when he received the Gold Medal Award from the University of Aarhus for his dissertation in clinical biochemistry. From 1984 till 2009, he was initially a lecturer and finally a Professor in Haemostasis and Thrombosis at Aarhus University. In 1992 and 1994 respectively, he participated in the establishment of the Skejby Hospital National Comprehensive Haemophilia Care Centre and regional Diagnostic Thrombosis Reference Centre in Denmark. He remained involved in the development and running of the centres until 2009.

In 2008, as part of the Interdisciplinary Working Group, he was instrumental in the production of the “European Principles of Haemophilia Care”. The principles set standards for the provision of comprehensive haemophilia care that should be available in each European country. They are the basis for the quality requirements that today must be met in order to be certified as a haemophilia comprehensive care centre in Europe.

Prof Ingerslev was the chairman of the Danish Haemophilia Association’s medical committee, a member of the Editorial Board of Haemophilia (1998 – 2010), as well as a member of the American Society of Haematology (ASH) and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).

He was a founding member of EAHAD, serving as the Executive Committee Secretary of our association from 2007 until 2010.

Dedicated clinician, highly respected colleague and a key figure in our community, he will be missed but not forgotten.
